Feast Day August 30

Youssef was born in the village of Lehfed on March 8, 1889.

As a child, Youssef spent his nights in prayer, saying, “God can see me, God can see me. Jesus, Mary, and Saint Joseph, help me at the moment of death.”

In 1905, at the age of 16, Youssef desired to become a Lebanese Maronite Order monk. He left home and joined the Saints Cyprian and Justine Monastery in Kfifane.

After eight days, Youssef received the novice cassock and took the name Estephanos. On August 23, 1907, Father Youssef Saker, superior of the monastery, received Blessed Brother Estephan’s vows.

Brother Estephan spent 31 years at the monastery. He worked in the fields and gardens with dedication, keeping his childhood motto, “God sees me,” in all his work.

On August 30, 1938, Brother Estephan died at the age of 49 and was buried at the monastery.

O God, who in Your kindness called Your servant Blessed Estephan Nehme to follow Your call, help us to live by his words, “God can see me,” in all aspects of our lives.

Grant that we may hold fast to You with all our heart and, like Blessed Estephan, deny ourselves and follow Your plan for us.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
